GPO ITALIANATE ARCHITECTURE

The Adelaide GPO is an outstanding example of a GPO in a principal city. It was Adelaide’s most expensive building at the time and indicates the importance placed on it by the community and reflects the confidence and prosperity of South Australia. It has obvious architectural excellence and incorporates significant features. The Italianate style was more appropriate for the climate than traditional English designs and the large central hall with its natural lighting, where transactions were carried out inside the building and not through external arcades as in other facilities, was unique. It is, literally, the centre of South Australia and still significant in the city streetscape or as a gateway feature viewed from Victoria Square. View Collection
